What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation explained
AEO or Answer Engine Optimisation - is the practice of structuring content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews can find it, understand it, and use it directly when answering someone’s question. Where traditional SEO aimed to rank a page at the top of a list of links, AEO aims to get the actual answer found, extracted and used.
Why this is different from ranking #1 on Google
Ranking first in Google search means someone has to click the link, read your content, and find the answer themselves. AEO is about a different, more modern appraoch to search: an AI tool reads the page on someone’s behalf and hands them the answer directly, often without a click at all.
This changes what “success” looks like. A page can be genuinely useful for AEO without ever being the top blue link - what matters is whether the content answers the question clearly enough, and is well enough structured, for an AI model to lift it out and use it with confidence.
What actually makes content “answer engine optimised”
A few consistent content structure patterns show up in results that are cited by AI tools:
- A direct answer near the top. The answer should be in the first sentence or two of the pages content, with detail following after. No preamble.
- Content headers phrased as real questions. Writing content in a question and answer structure helps AI models quickly find the correct content. “What is X?” is a better heading than “Overview” for example.
- Structured data (schema markup). A schema provides the AI models with a machine-readable version of what the page is saying, not just prose to interpret.
- Specific, checkable detail. Real numbers, real dates, real examples. Showing authenticity, expertise and writing honest content is better than filler.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No, absolutely not, it sits alongside it. A page still needs the technical fundamentals (markup, crawlability, page-speed, clean structure and schema) that SEO has always cared about. AEO just adds another layer on top: writing and structuring the content specifically so it’s easy for an AI model to extract a reliable, correct and confident answer.
Who actually needs to think about this
Any business whose customers might ask an AI tool a question before searching Google. That’s already a large and fast-growing group of searches or prompts, and it’s only expanding as more people default to asking ChatGPT or a voice assistant instead of typing directly into a search engine.
The honest caveat
AEO is a genuinely new and fast-moving area. Best practices that work well today may shift as AI search tools themselves change how they select and cite sources. The fundamentals: content clarity, structure, authenticity and specificity are a safe bet regardless of how the tools evolve; it’s our job to stay on top of the other bits, and change with the updates, so your content doesn’t have to.
